What hosting and maintenance should cover after a site goes live

What you should own, what a maintenance month includes, and the one restore test that tells you a backup is real.

Launch day is the start

Hosting is where the site runs. Maintenance is the set of checks that keep it opening, updated, and recoverable. A launch without those checks looks finished on Friday and fails quietly on a later Monday, usually when a form stops sending or a login expires.

What you should own, even if someone else operates it

The company should hold the domain registration, the billing email, and a written note of where the site is hosted. If those sit only in a vendor account you cannot access, you do not control the site. Ask for the registrar, the renewal date, and an admin contact that belongs to the company.

The same rule applies to analytics, the email inbox on the contact form, and any ad account. Operation can be delegated. Ownership should stay with the business.

What a basic maintenance month includes

  • Confirm the site opens on a phone and that the main form still sends to a person.
  • Apply framework and server updates that close a security issue.
  • Name a backup from this month, and name the person who knows how to restore it.
  • Read the form inbox so enquiries are not sitting unseen.
  • Note what changed: a new page, a removed page, or a link that no longer lands.

New features, a redesign, a month of articles, and ad campaigns are separate work. Mixing them into “maintenance” is how small fixes get delayed and how bills become unclear. Say which list a task belongs to before it starts.

The restore test

Once, ask for a restore of last month’s backup onto a private address, not onto the live site. If that has never been done, you have a backup file, not a backup you can trust. This is a fair request of any host. A backup that cannot be opened is not a backup.

Write down the date of the test and where the private copy was checked. The next test can be months later. The point is that someone has seen a restore succeed.

How this website handles the same work

The public pages of jantarax.com follow the schedule on the site standards page. Guides show the date they were last reviewed. Navigation points at pages that exist. If a page is wrong, write to hr@jantarax.com with the address and the sentence that needs a correction.

Questions

Is uptime the same as maintenance?

No. Uptime means the server answered. Maintenance also covers updates, form delivery, backups you can restore, and pages that still match the business.

How often should the restore test happen?

At least once when you start with a host, and again after any move to a new server. A yearly repeat is enough for a brochure site that changes slowly.
